Outline on Objections to Christianity

Here is an outline for a lecture I gave on objections to Christianity at my church:

Here is the audio

How to Answer Objections:

1. Find the hidden assumption or presupposition behind the argument operating in the background – expose it.

2. Challenge it – based on their worldview, how do they justify this hidden assumption?

3. Use their own argument against them – turn it around to show the inconsistency of their position.

1. The Problem of Evil

Always use Scripture to answer objections.

God will one day do away with evil.

The mistake is demanding that God must do away with it right now.

We must believe by faith that God has a good purpose for allowing evil and suffering, but that he will do away with all evil and suffering at the Second Coming.

2. Old Testament “Genocide”

God cannot murder because he is the creator of everything – 1 Sam 2:6; Deut 32:39.

The nations were deserving of death: Deut 9:4-5; 18:9-10.

Corporate Solidarity – Achan in Joshua 7

3. Atrocities Committed by “Christians”

The Crusades, Inquisition, Salem Witch Trials

As a Protestant, I don’t have to defend the practices of the Roman Catholic Church.

Not everyone who names the name of Christ is a Christian.

4. How Could A Loving God Send People to Hell?

Scripture is our authority and we must believe whatever it says: 2 Tim 3:16-17.

No one is deserving of salvation – Romans 3.

The depravity and hatred of mankind for God – Rom 8:7; Eph 2:1-3.

He would be perfectly just to send us all to hell.

The fact that he chooses to save some is owing completely to his grace.

The only one who deserves heaven is Jesus.

God is love, but God is also holy and just.

Assumption that God makes no distinctions in his love – Eph 5:22-33

It would be unjust for God to not punish sinners – the necessity of the cross.

5. What About Those Who Have Never Heard The Gospel?

You are a pagan who has now heard.

Same responses as Objection #4

We answer them with Scripture: Rom 10:9-17; 1:18-32; 2:12; Eph 2:12; John 3:16-18; 1 John 5:5.

6. The Bible Treats Women as Property Without Any Social Status or Authority

Jesus and the New Testament elevated the status of women as fellow heirs of Christ.

The Bible does not see equality and role-differentiation as mutually exclusive: 1 Cor 11:2-12; Eph 5:21-33; 1 Tim 2:11-14; Titus 2:2-5; 1 Pet 3:1-7.

7. The Bible Approves of Slavery

1 Timothy 1:10 says enslavers will not inherit the kingdom of God.

OT laws regarding slavery were designed to regulate a sinful man-made institution as an accommodation to their evil hearts – Mark 10:5.

Paul wanted Christian slaves to win their masters to Christ, not run away or rebel: Eph 6:5-9.

8. Christians Don’t Believe In Marriage Equality for Homosexuals

Christians do not accept the presupposition that sexual orientation is a genetically determined quality like ethnicity – twin studies.

There is hope for change in Christ – 1 Cor 6:9-11.

9. Christians Are Hypocrites

Just like objection #3

Not everyone who names the name of Christ is a Christian.

Jesus predicted this: Matthew 7:21-23; 13:18-23.

10. The Bible Is Full of Contradictions

Call their bluff, hand them a Bible, and be prepared for every question.

See Gleason Archer’s Encyclopedia of Bible Difficulties

11. The Bible Contradicts Science

We looked at this objection last week.

It is “Science” that contradicts reality.

12. Miracles Are Impossible

David Hume’s pre-trial motion to dismiss evidence – circular reasoning

The existence of God allows for miracles.

13. Christianity Is An Emotional Crutch

If Christianity is real, then it should satisfy man’s deepest needs.

Summary:

Theological error arises from trying to accommodate Christianity with fallen man’s objections against God and the Bible – example of Harry Emerson Fosdick.

Examples:

1: Open Theism, Finite Godism; 2: Marcionism, Liberalism; 3: Erastianism; 4: Universalism, Annihilationism, Pluralism; 5: Inclusivism; 6: Egalitarianism, Feminism; 7: Racist Theology; 8: Gay-Christian Movement; 9: Antinomianism, Sandemanianism; 10: Errantism; 11: Theistic Evolution; 12: Deism; 13: Fideism.
